Spring 2018 #1

Spring is very late this year due to several cold snaps in March… but it’s coming!

City Views #289: Oberhausen 11

One more view from the bridge of Oberhausen’s Mülheimer Strasse crossing one of the main railway lines in the area. In this photo, another freight train obliged me with coming into the shot and you can also see parts of the Turbinenhalle complex in the background I showed on the earlier photos. The sign says OBERHAUSEN HBF 1200m – the main railway station is 1.2 kilometers in the direction the train is going. If you look at the Google Maps link I posted yesterday, you can follow the railway line to the west through the big triangle and to the south to see the station.

City Views #287: Oberhausen 9

Looking down at the main railway route between Oberhausen and Mülheim from the bridge that was part of the previous photo. The long lens shot exaggerates the busyness of the area a bit, but there’s even a freight train coming through!

Diesel II

One last tele-macro test shot with the SX1 I took of some of my model trains. This is a Minitrix gauge N model of a V200 series diesel locomotives, specifically the later V200.1/221. This is not actually a model from my childhood – I bought this about ten years ago from Ebay, although I do have a very old cast-iron model in H0 of a V200 from the 1960s. I think I’m going to take photos of all the model trains sometime now that I’ve got a good camera for it!

Diesel

Remember those red diesel locomotives I posted a while back? Here’s a model of one, shot as a macro test with my new camera. Actually this is not really a macro, but a zoom shot from a distance.

Just putting the SX1 through the paces… a bit of model train macro is a good excercise!

Classic Diesel

Here’s something from 2008 I found while rummaging around in the old photos: two classic diesel locomotives I managed to photograph out of a moving train. Apart from the unsightly graffiti, these were in their original livery, but they belonged to a private railway company called EfW instead of the Deutsche Bahn, who retired those locomotives in 2001. These are the Deutsche Bundesbahn Class V100, originally built between 1958 and 1963 in large quantities and used for regional and freight trains and occasionally for shunting.  Until their retirement, they were a very common sight even on electrified lines and afterwards many of them were bought by private companies, who used them for freight and repair work. I’m not sure how common they are nowadays, but in 2008 they were still around, often in their original wine-red liveries like the ones in this photo.

Mini-Eisenbahn
