More Moon craters from July 5th.

Another Moon from July 4, processing as usual. I think I’m getting the hang of this!

The Moon from June 3 – a slightly different processing approach with more contrast to make the “seas” more pronounced. Stacked from 20 single photos with Registax, plus a little sharpening.

Jupiter and Venus are appearing very close together in the sky at the moment and yesterday, we were able to actually see the two planets together. I was only able to take this photo through the fly net on the kitchen window, which left some interesting artifacts, but even the distinct shape of the Venus phase at the moment is clearly visible. Usually I don’t even get them together in one camera frame and this is a 1600×1065 crop from a 10 megapixel original, so they are already really close!

I haven’t posted a Moon for over a month and today we were actually able to see it after all that bad weather we recently had. This one was stacked from 20 photos which I had actually taken handheld because I was too lazy to get the tripod out – but it worked and it actually looks quite nice.

This may be the last ISS long-exposure photo for now, because the good passes of the station are coming earlier each day when it is still to bright to take photos. I left this almost unprocessed save for some noise reduction and a slight colour correction in RawTherapee, otherwise it would have brought out only more noise and other artefacts. This was again a two-minute exposure with the Powershot SX1, which is actually only equipped to do 15 seconds, so the result is surprisingly good.

Finally a well-timed long-exposure capture of the International Space Station, and I think I even got rid of all the hot pixels. This was the second pass at about half past eleven yesterday evening – the previous one was so early that the sky was still too bright for photography, although I was able to see it. As usual, this was taken with my Powershot SX1 running CHDK and processed in RawTherapee and PaintShopPro.

This is what happens when you start the camera too late – the trail from the space station begins in the middle of the photo! I had configured something wrong and lost a couple of seconds, but it still turned out to be a nice picture so I didn’t even crop it. This was again a 120 second single exposure with the CHDK-enhanced Powershot SX1 – and if you want to spot the station yourself, the best website to find it is Heavens-above.com!

The International Space Station is making some beautiful nighttime passes these days over Europe and I took the opportunity to take some more shots. This one is two days old and was actually the second half-botched attempt of the night, but with a bit of digital help I managed to make something out of it. This is a 120-second single exposure made with my Canon Powershot SX1 running CHDK.
