City Views #41: Schloßstrasse IV

The same perspective as in the last image of the City Views series, looking down Mülheim’s Schloßstrasse, but with a wider field of view. This photo is from March 2003 and belongs to one of the first batches of images I took with my first digital camera, a Canon Powershot A200 – so it looks a little rough, but still quite nice in black and white.

City Views #40: Schloßstrasse III

Okay, this is getting tricky, because I realized I should have posted the photos in the reverse order because here, we are actually going up Mülheim’s Schloßstrasse backwards. So we are again looking west, but actually moving east “up” the street. This is actually a kind of iconic shot, because the fountain, the stone slabs and the black stone ball are a remnant of the original design of the pedestrian zone from the 1970s, before it was redone sometime in the 1990s. There are also potted trees around today, which were not there in 2004 when this photo was taken. Again, you can see a lot of history here – open cafés, Woolworth, Kaufhof and even two pharmacies almost opposite each other. I think one of the pharmacies is still there, but not much else – what a difference only nine years make…

Return of the JU-52

The Junkers JU-52 is back in the skies of Mülheim! This is one of the only eight airworthy JU-52’s and one of the two regularly visiting our little airport Essen-Mülheim. HB-HOT is owned by a swiss company and is sponsored by a luggage manufacturer – this is also the one that made a tour through the USA last year and I think it was even at the Oshkosh air festival. The other one is owned by a Lufthansa foundation for historic planes and has also been here this year at least two times. The deep buzz of the engines is unmistakable and sound like nothing else flying around here!

Return of the Zebra

The little zebra jumping spiders are still around on the balcony, but really hard to spot!
