A slightly closer look at those Garden Cross Spider hatchlings from last month.

Last month, I noticed a strange blob in the roses on my balcony – it was a cluster of tiny Garden Cross Spiders, which were amazing to watch as they milled around their tight net. Sometimes they were all cuddled together in a ball, but mostly they just wriggled around – they were there for two days and on the third day they were all gone as if they had gotten their marching orders. Curiously this was almost in the same spot in which the blackbirds had built their nest all those years ago – I guess this balcony flowerbox is a good hatchery for all sorts of species!

Firebug from the front – unfortunately slightly out of focus because

Last week, I saw some Firebugs again in the same place I found them last year – but this time the photos didn’t turn out too well because it was too shady. There are still some worth sharing, though!

Jumping spider in attack position! This was actually after it had jumped on the lens twice :-).

This might well haven been the same spider I had taken a photo of three days previously.

Recently, I spotted the first Jumping Spider of the season on the balcony. It seemed a little confused and didn’t jump at all, because we disturbed it while repotting some plants and then shuffled off to somewhere.

I found this unposted fly macro from August in the bug folder – I completely forgot about it!
