City Views #53: Railway Bridge III

Looking to the west, this is Mülheim’s oldest railway bridge – it was originally constructed in 1866 and has been upgraded a couple of times since, but now has been abandoned by the railway. The whole viaduct is comprised of 39 arches on both sides of the river together, but the actual bridge just has three steel arches, of which you can see only two in this photo from 2004.

City Views #52: Railway Bridge II

This is not strictly Mülheim’s old railway bridge itself, but the view east in direction of the central railway station from the top of the pedestrian stairway. The rails and overhead wires on this raised embankment have been removed since I took this photo in 2004, but the path it cuts through the inner city is still distinctly visible. I wonder if the city will ever get around to make it into pedestrian path, because walking along it would provide completely new photo opportunities!

City Views #51: Railway Bridge I

This is the old railway bridge crossing the Ruhr about 300 meters upstream from the Schloßbrücke. I took these photos back in 2004, when there still were overhead wires and the line was still occasionally used for cargo transport, but today it has been abandoned and even some of the rails are gone. The bridge is still used as a pedestrian crossing and it’s supposed to be a nature bicycle path from Essen in the east to Duisburg in the west, but so far nothing has really happened with it. I actually intend to put everything around the river into a completely seperate series in colour, but I found that the photos of the old railway bridge look great in black and white, so the next few pictures will be a walk over the grand old bridge.

Grumpy Pigeons in the Rain

It’s grainy and unsharp, but I still like this photo because it looks so rough.
