Moonstack #79 – Easter Edition

We didn’t get to see the Lunar Eclipse this weekend, but at least I had a chance to grab some photos of the Moon yesterday evening. This is a tonemapped HDR from three stacked exposures with about 20 images each – I’ve tried this before and the increased dynamic in brightness made this interesting processing experiment possible, even though it’s still somewhat noisy.

One Moon, One Planet

We had a wonderful view of the crescent Moon and Venus appearing together in the western sky this evening. The photo doesn’t really do it justice, but you can even see a bit of earthshine on the Moon.

Another Moon attempt with the multiple exposure method – this one was tone-mapped from three exposures, each stacked from about 20 images. I went a bit easier on the processing here, but it is still noticeable that brighness and contrast have a somewhat increased dynamic.

Yesterday’s full Moon in a bit of an experiment – this is an exposure fusion of two stacked images, one brighter than the other. I’ve never tried it this way and it’s a little noisy and somewhat lacks detail, but the overall contrast and brightness are much better.

The Moon from March 3rd, the last one we’ve seen until today due to the lousy weather. I was still able to coax some details out of this, but it gets more difficult without crater shadows!

We were clouded out on March 1, but here’s the Moon from two days ago. It gets more difficult to get details the fuller the Moon gets, but this stack from about 20 images worked quite well.

My continuing adventures in low-budget astrophotography… here’s yesterday’s afternoon daylight Moon, with surprisingly good crater detail. As usual, 20 source photos stacked with Registax and processed a little bit with the wavelet sharpening filter and the highpass filter in PSP.
