This striped blue marvel is a prototype diesel locomotive from the early 1970s that was modernized into the UmAn 202 303-0 about a decade later. This particular Henschel-BBC DE2500 has been in Berlin’s Museum of Technology since the 1980s and I remember seeing it as something futuristic back then!

The East German DR 118, formerly V180, has only been in Berlin’s Museum of Technology since the early 1990s, so I never saw it when I was in the Museum as a child in the 80s.

The DR 118, formerly V180, was the East German counterpart to the DB V200 and came a few years later in the early 1960s. It was the biggest and most powerful diesel engine constructed in East Germany before other locomotives were imported from the Sowjet Union.

The V200 018 Diesel Locomotive in Berlin’s Museum of Technology looks almost like new even though it is from 1957! It’s 18 Meters long, has two 12-cylinder diesel motors and weighs 80 tons.

The V200 018 Diesel Locomotive in Berlin’s Museum of Technology is one of the few from the time the Deutsche Bundesbahn didn’t have the familiar ‘cookie’ logo yet, so they had it written out in elegant letters on the side!

I’ve been fascinated by the West German V200 Diesel Locomotive since I was a child, because we have a cast-iron model of it in our family’s collection. The first V200 were ready in 1953, the 018 that is now in Berlin was completed in 1957 and had been in use until 1987 – and it didn’t arrive in the Museum until 1990. I was never able to see it when I was young, because my last visit was in 1989, so it was amazing to finally see it in 2017.

This cute little red number is the DB VT95 ‘Schienenbus’, which was essentially a diesel bus on rails built for use on smaller railway lines in the early 1950s. Together with the similar VT98 they were still in use until the 1980s and a familiar sight even in my neighbourhood.
