An experiment for the 50th stacked Moon from yesterday: I used the digital zoom of the camera for this to get a larger image which sacrificed detail, but it also allowed to get rid of a lot of artifacts in the stacked image, which I resized from 1200×1200 to 800×800 – I’m not quite convinced if this is really more detailed that a straight 600×600 crop, but it was worth a try. I’m not sure if I’m going to use this method again, though.

I did this once before in January with the old camera to answer the question if it’s possible to pick up Jupiter’s moons – and yes, it works. This new capture with the SX1 from yesterday shows all four Galilean moons, from bottom left to top right, Europa, Io, Ganymede and, very faint, Callisto. There are, of course, no surface details on Jupiter visible and the size of the planet is blown up too much because I had to overexpose the image to get the moons to show up, but it’s still amazing to see that the camera can pick up objects with magnitudes between 5 and 6!

First full Moon with the SX1! Not quite perfect because of some light cloud cover and still a bit noisy, but it’s a good effort nevertheless and much bigger and more detailed than with the S5!

Another chance to test out the SX1 for Moon photography today – but again, the source images were far away from perfect, because it was not quite dark yet and it took a lot of playing around with filters, brightness and contrast to get this result. This was again stacked from 10 photos.

Finally a proper chance to test out the SX1 with the Moon – although I have messed this up a bit because I had the camera set to a higher ISO accidentially. I stacked ten of them together with RegiStax and the result is not great, but a good example how HUGE the Moon has now become – the larger zoom and the higher resolution let me get a lot closer now!

My 42nd stacked Moon is another Supermoon from yesterday, the last one of this season. About 15 frames combined with RegiStax and processed a bit more to bring out some more details. More resolution isn’t possible with my Powershot S5, but I still try to get something out of it :-).
