In the background of this shot is the new stretch of buildings I had mentioned on the 1990 photo of the Tourainer Ring. This view is looking to the East from directly next to the highrises and in the Summer you usually can’t even see the buildings through the trees and bushes.

Cactus Flower season begins early this year! Actually, those might still be the leftovers from the Christmas wave, but there are still quite a few that will open over the next week or so.

The Oxeye Daisies were also blooming in mid-December… which they still do right now too, actually!

I’ve had to take this photo again: I’m still basically standing in the footprint of the highrises, but I can see the street where we live from here! I’ve had to zoom in heavily, but you can see the corner of our block of houses, the old house down on the street below and even the garage next to it.

More leftover clouds from last year – this was from December 29. If you look closely, you can see something red in the top of the left tree – it’s not an image artifact, but a balloon which had been caught by the branches a couple of weeks ago and it’s still there flapping in the wind!

To keep the City Views going, I took a round of new photos while we were out shopping between the holidays. This means that some shots will look familiar because I’ve already done this one year ago too, but this time I made sure to shoot from different perspectives and I will also include colour versions of each photo and a Google Maps reference in the links below the posts. We start our walk right here, in the inner city near the Forum shopping mall in the shadows of the highrises. I’m sure I’ve never done this particular perspective before – you can see two of the other highrises in the background, the shopping mall is just to the right and the fourth highrise is behind me.

This is not really a good photo, but more an experiment I tried several times before: can a Canon Powershot SX1 bridge camera pick up Jupiter’s moons? Yes, it can – they may be blurry, but you can definitely see all four Galilean Moons on this photo made on January 1 at about 2:15am. Jupiter itself is grossly overexposed and the camera is not even able to resolve any detail from the planet, but it’s still astonishing that it is possible to pick up the Galilean Moons with it.
